Yellowbird hosts a vibrant community of gardeners, and a large set of raised garden plots in the space in front of the hall.
We have more than 40 raised cedar beds, at various heights. While most are about 18″ high, a few are as tall as 30″ and are offered to gardeners with mobility challenges. We have an in-ground seasonal water tap for easy watering, and a long row of fruit trees on the surrounding berm. We also have a beautiful wooden gazebo as a focal and gathering point, which is often used for shade, casual conversation, and even the occasional outdoor music festival.
Most of our beds are rented seasonally by individuals, who plant and harvest for their own personal use. However, we do have several garden beds reserved for other community connections, including a bed for the Keheewin Kindergarten class, a bed for the food bank, and a few beds for the public to harvest from (these beds are marked with signs). Our gardeners look after these beds as part of their contributions to the gardening community.
