Landscape Design Contest

Are you a landscape designer, or a landscape design student?  Show us what you’ve got!

We are currently accepting design proposals for our new Community Garden.  We are excited about the possibilities this garden holds, and can’t wait to see our local creativity!  This is a great chance to be involved in our community in a lasting way, by leaving your mark on a public space that will be loved and enjoyed for years to come.

The winning design must follow these guidelines:

  • Garden beds must be raised by 16″ – 30″.  Suggested bed materials are 4’x4′ cedar boards, or landscaping stones.
  • Individual beds must be a minimum of 4′ x 4′, and a maximum of 4′ x 12′
  • There must be at least 15 garden beds, and no more than 30
  • Pathways between all garden beds and other features must be at least 3′, preferably 4′
  • All garden beds must be located outside of shade cast by existing or proposed trees
  • All garden beds and other features must be at least 3 meters away from trees (measured from the trunk)
  • All ground within the garden property must be grass-free, and have an appropriate ground cover (mulch, for instance).
  • Garden must be accessible from all sides
  • Indicate placement of a water spigot (to be installed)
  • Indicate location of composting area.  Suggest two or three 3’x3’x3′ bins for compost.  Prefer composting area to be away from main view.
  • Include a 15’x15′ gazebo with picnic table.  This will be a future installment.
  • Diagram indicates primary garden area (in green), and optional extra space (in yellow).  Please keep primary garden features within the green boundaries.
  • Extra space (in yellow on diagram) may be used for future garden expansion, or for optional features such as fruit trees.  It is not intended to use all the available space, only to indicate that it is available as extra space.
  • You may include optional future garden expansion plans that include the raised berm (for example, terraced garden beds)
  • Garden areas you choose to put on the extra space do not count towards the 30 bed maximum
  • Small shrubs are permitted
  • Fruit trees are permitted (so long as they will not cast shade on garden beds)
  • Perennial bed areas are permitted, but please keep in mind that maintenance of this garden is a volunteer effort.  However, perennial herb areas, berry areas, etc. will be considered.

Location:  10710 – 19 Avenue NW
